Sustainability, every day with Luffa Haru

Luffa Haru began with an idea: sustainability becomes real when it is part of every day.

Every day, we make choices about what to bring into our lives and our homes. These choices are largely shaped by the culture we live in. Our behaviour, in turn, shapes culture. In this continuous loop, culture changes when our behaviour changes. And that change begins at home. When we buy sustainable alternatives and live with them for a long time, sustainability becomes real in our lives. This is where Luffa Haru began.

Why luffa

Luffa is the natural, dried fibre of a gourd, used as a household sponge for centuries globally, long before the synthetic sponge was introduced. It is effective both as a sponge and a gentle scourer for all surfaces without scratching. It does not stain and dries quickly between uses, which makes it hygienic and free from odour. It does not shed microplastics. It is also beautiful as a natural object with visible fibres and a tactile presence. Finally, it lasts for many months and can return to nature at the end of its life.

Why gifting makes sense

The barrier to adopting a luffa sponge is often uncertainty. People don’t know how good this natural alternative is until they have experienced it. Rather than asking people to make better choices, Luffa Haru allows people to experience it as a gift. Effectively, the barrier to first use is removed. Over time, the luffa sponge becomes the new normal.

What Luffa Haru offers organisations

For organisations, engaging employees on sustainability is often challenging. Moments such as Earth Day create an opportunity for reflection, but without something tangible, these moments can remain abstract.

Luffa Haru offers a solution to engage employees on sustainability that is personal and practical. Providing a simple, well-made object for use at home creates a different kind of engagement: one where people can experience something that is beautiful, effective and long-lasting every day, and draw their own conclusions about sustainable alternatives.

Our turnkey solution uses convivial, peer-led engagement sessions, supported by Luffa Haru’s sustainable gift sets. Teams are invited to share reflection on sustainability and celebate what the Earth provides us with. Engagement continues beyond the session through daily use of the gift at home. Impact is measured via pre-designed surveys at suggested intervals, enabling organisations to demonstrate concrete action on internal engagement on sustainability.

Luffa Haru’s vision is to establish sustainably grown luffa as the daily kitchen sponge in Dutch homes. Organisations that choose to engage in this way can play a meaningful role in supporting that shift and be recognised as early contributors.
